DIY SOUND BITES

Here are a few suggestions for creating a DIY version of Sound Bites! Make a Sound Bites dinner party (or brunch or whatever you’d like)! You do not have to be a musician or foodie to do this, we have plenty of suggestions for everyone.

We have constant feedback from our senses, and these signals affect each other more than we realize. Simply taking a moment to check in with how we are processing, feeling, and being affected by the sounds, tastes, smells, and sights we are experiencing can be a great way to ground ourselves. Even better if this check in time can be fun, connective, and creative.

For the foodie

You love to cook, find a friend who plays music, composes music, or makes great playlists

  1. Design a menu, get together with your pal and have them imagine a sound, a song, or a general vibe. There are no wrong answers!

  2. Have as many courses of food or drinks paired with music as you want. Live or recorded music works!

  3. Get together and test it out, or if you’re brave just throw your party. (Here’s a secret: it doesn’t have to be perfect because people will ALWAYS enjoy food and music)

For the Music Lover

You love to play, write, or curate music, find a friend that loves food.

  1. Decide on your program, then show your foodie friend. They can listen to it and then design some food that goes with it. (This is basically what Ben and I did for our Sound Bites Culinary Concert)

  2. Get together and share the collaboration with people you love.

Other Ideas!

Maybe you don’t have a friend that can help you curate the event, or maybe both of you lean more in the culinary or musical direction together. That’s ok. I think sound bites can work in countless situations.

  1.  You can create a menu to be paired with food from a regional area, a mood, a holiday… the possibilities are endless. You don’t even have to cook, you can pair music to pre-made foods… like pizza (why not?!)

  2. You can have a live pairing where guests suggest songs, maybe you can even play multiple songs for one food and see if the experience changes (it most likely will)
